Bloody Harlan
Orene Onalee Wright, Black Star High School Graduation photograph, around 26 May 1940. Taken at Insull, Harlan County, Kentucky.

Orene was born in Colmar, Bell County, Kentucky in 1921. Her parents lived at Black Star around 1924 to 1927 where her sister Lela Winfred Wright was born. Soon there after the family moved to Insull and then later to Shawanee (near Harrogate), Tennessee where she attended Lincoln Memorial University for one quarter.

While living there she met Robert Charles Rutherford, a coal miner, from Vasper, Campbell County, Tennessee and they later married on 1 March 1941. They moved to Sun Mountain above Caryville and there they had two children: Jerald Wesley and Bradley Morris. After Bradley was born they moved to Insull, down in the camp where Bruce Douglas was born and soon thereafter up on the hill across from the school near the basketball court. Her last child, Jeffrey Brent was born at Pineville Community Hospital. She entered the Licensed Practical Nursing School at Pineville and later the family moved to Bird Branch on Highway 119 near East Pineville.

Upon graduation she worked at the Pineville hospital and later the family moved to Hulen in late 1965 and she began to work at the Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital (HARH), later the Daniel Boone Clinic and later at a Family Health Clinic. In 1971, at the behest of her son Bruce, she entered the 18 month nursing program at the nursing school at the HARH and became a Registered Nurse. She, Robert and Jeffrey moved to Pine Bluff, Arkansas in 1977 where she worked at a State Juvenile Home/School for Boys and then later at a nursing home in England, Arkansas. While at work at the nursing home she had a heart attack and later died at Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Pine Bluff in 1985.
