ALEX (EASY) AND JETTIE STEELE TAYLOR, FAMILY ALEX (EASY) AND JETTIE WERE MARRIED IN 1926, IN HAMILTON, OHIO, BUT WOULD SOON LIVE IN BLACK STAR. THEY MOVED IN WITH MY GRANDFATHER, ESOM STEELE, WHO LIVED IN THE HOUSE BETWEEN THE HARLAN TIPPLE AND THE BATH HOUSE. ESOM WAS THE MINE FOREMAN AT THE K.O.K. MINE. DAD’S BROTHERS: DINGLEY, JAMES, DEWEY AND SAM; AND MOM’S BROTHERS: CHARLES FOISTER AND WERT; WORKED FOR HIM (WHEN THEY WERE NOT FIRED). DAD AND MOM MOVED TO LEES FORK HOLLOW IN THE LATE 20’S OR THE EARLY 30’S, AND STARTED A FAMILY. ACTUALLY, MOM HAD ALREADY BEEN MARRIED AND THEY WERE RAISING TWO CHILDREN (MARIE AND CHARLES TIMUEL HUGHES). I WAS BORN IN 1935, JANET IN 1940, AND MARY IN 1942, IN LEES FORK – 7TH HOUSE ON THE RIGHT. BOBBY WAS BORN IN 1944 IN CORBIN, KY. MOM AND HER SISTERS (EFFIE, PAULINE, AND EVALINE) MUST HAVE BELIEVED IN TAKING PICTURES (FOR WE HAVE A LOT OF EARLY CHILDHOOD PICTURES. TRIPS TO THE FIRE TOWER ON SATURDAY OR SUNDAY MUST HAVE BEEN THE THING TO DO. MOM’S SISTER EFFIE WAS MARRIED TO PARKER SHELTON, AND THEY WERE VERY CLOSE TO OUR FAMILY. WE ALSO ENJOYED TRIPS WITH PAULINE AND HER HUSBAND, WILLIE SHOUPE. SCHOOL YEARS MY SISTER MARIE DIED IN 1936. I CAN REMEMBER TIM WHEN I WAS 4 OR 5 YEARS OLD. HE OWNED A BICYCLE AND A BIG BUCKET FULL OF MARBLES. HE MADE HIS OWN MONEY SELLING CANDY AT THE BATHHOUSE. BOB ENGLE (PEG LEG) LET TIM JOIN THE ARMY IN 1940 AT THE AGE OF 16, AND SPENT 5-YEARS IN THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS, BEING THERE WHEN THE JAPANESE BOMBED US ON DECEMBER 7, 1941. MOMS’ SISTERS PAULINE AND EVALINE GRADUATED WITH THE CLASS OF 1949. WE MOVED A LOT DURING THE 40’S, BUT I FINALLY GRADUATED FROM B.S.H.S. IN 1954-JANET IN 1957-MARY AND BOB ATTENDED LYNN CAMP H.S. IN CORBIN, MARY GRADUATED IN 1959 (LATER I WAS PRINCIPAL OF L.C.H.S. FOR 17 YEARS). MARRIED I MARRIED PAULINE TIPTON (1958 B.S.H.S) ON DEC. 21, 1957, NINE MONTHS AFTER GETTING OUT OF THE ARMY. PAULINE’S DAD, FRED TIPTON, OFTEN MENTIONED THAT MY GRANDFATHER GAVE HIM HIS 1ST JOB AS A COUPLER IN THE MINE. WE RAISED 5 CHILDREN-4 OF OURS AND ONE WE TOOK IN-THEY ARE: PENNY, REGINA, ROY, GREG, AND CHRIS MCDANIEL. OUR FOUR WERE ALL BORN IN HARLAN APPALACHIAN HOSPITAL. JANET MARRIED BOB DAVENPORT, AND THEY HAD TWO CHILDREN – DOUGLAS AND ANDREA. MARY MARRIED GARY FOX AND HAD TWO CHILDREN – MICHAEL AND RICHARD. BOB MARRIED CHRISTINA PANETTA AND THEY HAD FOUR CHILDREN – CASEY, ROBERT, ROBIN, AND JIM. TIM MARRIED DOOD RIELY AND THEY HAD 3 – TIM JR., CHERYL, AND PAM. SCHOOLING OF CHILDREN OUR FIVE AND MARY’S TWO GRADUATED FROM CORBIN H.S. BOB’S FOUR GRADUATED FROM ST. CAMILLUS H.S. JANET’S TWO ATTENDED LEXINGTON SCHOOLS. TIM’S THREE ATTENDED TITISVILLE, FLA. H.S. ACTIVITIES MY 2 AND MARY’S 2 BOYS PLAYED FOOTBALL FOR THE CORBIN REDHOUNDS IN THE LATE 70’S AND EARLY 80’S. THEY WERE INVOLVED IN WINNING THREE STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS AND A RUNNERS-UP. CHRIS MCDANIEL PLAYED FOOTBALL AT LYNN CAMP. OUR YOUNGEST SON GREG WAS A 4-YEAR STARTER FOR THE WKU HILLTOPPERS. OUT OF 16 CHILDREN WE HAD 7 TO GET DEGREE’S FROM VARIOUS COLLEGES – 2 AT EKU, 2 AT UK, 1 AT WKU, 1 AT UNIV. OF LOUISVILLE, 1 AT FLA. STATE. PAULINE AND I HAVE 17 GRAND CHILDREN (3 ALREADY IN COLLEGE AT THIS TIME (1 BOY PLAYS BASEBALL AT CUMBERLAND, 2 GIRLS ATTEND WKU. THE 3 BELONG TO REGINA AND BURLEY FOLEY. EACH OF THEM RECEIVED A BLACK STAR ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP. AT ONE TIME MY AND PAULINE’S CHILDREN LIVED HERE IN CORBIN, BUT NOW WE HAVE ONE IN PENSACOLA, FLA. AND ANOTHER IN SHREVEPORT, LA.
